Kodai-ji Temple is located at the foot of Mt. Reiyama in Higashiyama, Kyoto. Not far from the famous Kiyomizu-dera Temple is the ancient temple dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s principal wife, Hosei Shosho. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi died of illness in 1598, his wife Hosasasho stayed here to practice Buddhism and built this temple in 1606. Later, Hosesho himself also became a monk here. The temple was built in the eleventh year of Qingchang (1606). In the first year of Kanyei (1624), Sanjiang Shaoyi, the eminent monk of Jianren Temple, was invited to be the founding abbot. Starting from 2019, Gaotai Temple will hold personal exhibitions of painters every year.
In February 2027, it is planned to hold a 60-day retrospective exhibition of the newly added Dream of Red Mansions series paintings for the 2025 World Expo in the newly renovated Guest House.
